When I talk with peptide buyers, one question comes up again and again. Many customers ask: “Is the purity 98% or 99%?”
This is an important question, but it is not the whole picture. In peptide sourcing, purity and peptide content are two different things. If a buyer only compares purity, it is very easy to misunderstand the actual quality level, the real cost, and why two suppliers may offer very different prices for what looks like the same product.
This article is not written as a laboratory textbook. It is a practical note for B2B buyers who need to review COA / HPLC / MS documentation before making a purchasing decision.
Purity usually means the main peak purity
When a supplier says a peptide has 98% or 99% purity, most of the time they are referring to HPLC purity.
HPLC purity mainly tells you how clean the main peak is in the chromatogram. It helps buyers understand whether the target peptide peak is clean compared with related impurities, such as incomplete sequences, by-products, degradation-related peaks, or other impurity peaks.
HPLC Purity: 98.6%
It usually means the main detected peptide peak accounts for 98.6% of the chromatographic peak area under that test method. This is important. Purity is one of the first things a buyer should check.
But purity does not answer another important question: how much actual peptide is in the weighed material?
Peptide content means the actual peptide percentage
Peptide content is different from HPLC purity. In simple words, peptide content tells you how much real peptide material is present in the total sample weight.
Some buyers may also call this net peptide content or peptide assay, depending on how the COA or analytical document is written.
The remaining part may include water, residual solvents, salts, counterions, or other non-peptide components. These factors can affect the actual content, even when the HPLC purity looks high.

Peptide Content: 80%
This does not mean the HPLC result is fake. It means the main peptide peak is clean, but the total weighed material is not 98% actual peptide content. This is one of the most common misunderstandings I see in peptide sourcing.
Why this matters in real purchasing
Many buyers compare suppliers only by purity and price. At first glance, a 99% purity offer with a lower price may look better than a 98% purity offer with more complete documentation.
But if the lower-priced supplier does not provide peptide content, the buyer may not know the actual peptide percentage in the material. If another supplier uses higher-content raw material, the cost may naturally be higher.
In our sourcing experience, raw material with around 95% peptide content can cost much more than material with around 80% peptide content. In some cases, the cost difference can be around 1.5 times.
So when our price is higher than another supplier, it does not always mean we are taking more profit from the customer. Sometimes it simply means the raw material specification is different. This is also why a very low quotation should be reviewed carefully.
A real situation we often see
I have met buyers who only compared purity numbers. One customer once compared our quotation with another supplier. Our cost was already higher than the other supplier's selling price, so from the customer's view, our price looked too high.
Later, the customer chose the cheaper supplier. After receiving the finished products, most of the batch did not meet his expectations. At that point, the question was no longer “which supplier is cheaper?” The question became: how do I deal with this batch now?
This is the kind of situation B2B buyers should try to avoid before placing a larger order.
How I usually explain it to customers

For serious B2B purchasing, especially when the buyer needs stable supply, documentation, and repeat batches, peptide content is worth discussing.
What buyers should ask before comparing prices
- Is the purity based on HPLC?
- Is MS confirmation available?
- Is peptide content available?
- Is this a sample COA or the actual batch COA?
- Are the documents batch-specific?
- What testing is included in the quotation?
- What testing requires additional cost or time?
These questions help both sides communicate more clearly. They also help buyers avoid comparing two different specifications as if they were the same product.
A practical way to compare suppliers
When reviewing supplier documents, do not look at only one number. A better way is to compare:
- HPLC purity
- MS confirmation

- Batch-specific COA
- Testing items included
- Testing items available upon request
- Raw material specification
- Supplier communication
Sometimes the supplier with the lowest price is not really the lowest-cost option if the buyer later has to deal with quality issues, unclear documentation, or customer complaints.
